Snow Day!

While we were packing and getting ready to move out here, we opened a rubbermaid tub that had all of our snow stuff in it, including our thickest, heaviest winter coats. They each weighed about a hundred pounds, and we wondered if it would even be worth it to bring them since we probably would never need them down in the South.

But for whatever reason, we decided to pack them along and risk getting a little bit lower gas mileage on the way out. And thank goodness we did! We got 8 inches of snow last night and today wasn't even the first time we've busted out our winter gear. It does get cold here - super cold.

We even brought along Jonah's snow pants that he got for Christmas last year (that I was worried he would never get to wear). Also, his uncles got him this hat for Christmas this year and he LOVES it.

Since we didn't expect to need a sled this winter, we used our laundry basket and some tie downs instead - Jonah didn't mind a bit, and we had a bunch of neighbors compliment us on our ingenuity!

That's another difference I've noticed between North Carolina and Utah. When it snows in Utah, it's so common that only a few people venture out to have fun in the snow - but here, it's like a cause to celebrate! All the kids get school off, everyone is out rolling around and throwing snowballs, there's a snowman in front of every house, people really take advantage of winter activities around here! We saw and talked to so many of our neighbors that we had never seen before.

We pulled Jones all around our little cul-de-sac and at the end there is this little grove of trees, so we ventured through. It's the kind of place you'd imagine someone would drag a dead body - but then again that's everywhere out here. It was super pretty with all the snow though.

This would be a killer place to go sledding, there are hills everywhere. Too bad we didn't have one :( we did have that laundry basket though, and tried our very best! And despite what you may think, Jonah was having a blast.

Haha, are we terrible parents? I promise he had fun, he was even laughing during the first couple rounds. Kade got a video from the bottom:

I guess we had him go down one time too many, because after that he just wanted to scoot down on his bum. No video of that, though - because our phones would cost too much to replace and the snow was starting to come down harder and faster.

After we were all sufficiently chilled, we decided to top off our snow day by building a little snow friend. Kade wanted to name him Lorenzo Snowman, but since it's wearing a frilly scarf I don't think that she would appreciate that. How about Jennifer Snowpez?

Then we went inside and got ourselves some hot cocoa and watched TV for a while - you know, your typical snow day. Now we just have to get through another couple nights of being stuck at home. All this snow will be gone in a few days (next weekend it's supposed to get into the mid 60s!), but before then it has to melt and freeze and become thick, treacherous black ice. Good thing we got our bread and milk!
