Peculiar, Indeed

I first wanted to write this post when Kade was working at Gander Mountain - he would come home nearly nightly with a funny story about his co-workers or weird questions they would ask him because they found out he was Mormon.

When it first got out that he was Mormon, his co-workers didn't necessarily treat him any differently, but he later overheard one of them telling another, "Yeah, he's Mormon. Mormon's don't drink hot chocolate."

During his first week at work his co-workers were all talking about things they had done in the past that landed them in jail, like it weren't no big thing. One of Kade's co-workers asked him what he'd been in jail for, and was shocked to find out that he had never done any time. Apparently that's just as much a part of life as getting your driver's license?

They all love his name. It's funny, in Utah everyone has a cousin or brother or nephew named Kade or some similar version, but here hardly anyone has ever heard of it.

Once they were all talking about pregnancy, because one of his co-workers was expecting. Another girl said, just like it was the most normal thing, "I've been pregnant twice but never had a baby." Which could very well mean a miscarriage, but... it probably means the other thing.

They were all completely shocked to find out that Kade had saved himself for marriage.

His peers at school found out too, and that started a whole new slew of weird questions. He came home one day earlier this week and told me that some girls had come up to him and asked him, "So, where does the polygamy thing come in?" He said that Mormons don't practice polygamy. The girls insisted that they do, because they had seen an episode of Sister Wives and those guys are Mormon - to which Kade replied, "They're not Mormon." But the girls insisted they were right, so... there's that. They also went on to ask why Mormon girls got married at 15, because they had seen some bridal reality TV show and the Mormon girls were all like, 15. Kade said that he'd never heard of that happening, but the girls who were "asking" all these "questions" insisted they were right, again. Well, because they had seen a TV show about it. Duh.

Sometimes I get a little annoyed for Kade, because I have to, because nothing really ever happens to me. He's the one that's out there in the world - being all peculiar.
