As I've been reading my scriptures, the question keeps popping into my head of whether or not modern day prophets keep a record of the people today. What do you think? Is there a book that has been passed down from Joseph Smith Jr. to President Thomas S Monson?
I'd like to think that if there were, one of the entries President Monson made was about Hurricane Irma.
No one was really prepared for Hurricane Harvey, and the people of Houston paid dearly. But with Hurricane Irma, meteorologists watched it form in the Atlantic Ocean for days in advance. They saw it grow bigger and bigger, until it reached a level unseen by the US in recent history. The largest Hurricane that had made landfall prior was the Great Galveston Hurricane, which was a category 4 and killed 8,000 people. Hurricane Irma was a category 5, and was slated to come right up the center of Florida, swallowing the state whole. There was reason to panic.
But in the days before landfall, I saw so many requests for prayers on behalf of the people of Florida. People were pleading with their friends, families, total strangers to pray for their safety. #prayforflorida spread throughout the world.
And although Irma did some incredible damage to the Keys, and has still killed several people, by the time it touched continental Florida it had been downgraded to a tropical storm.
That's incredible. It went from the largest hurricane on US record to a tropical storm - which is less than a category 1 hurricane. It wasn't even a hurricane anymore. That happened quickly, and is totally crazy.
Maybe President Monson's entry went a little something like this:
"And it came to pass that in the days before the great destruction of the people of Florida, many of the saints cried up unto their Father on behalf of their brothers and sisters. And because of their faith, God heard their prayers and the people of Florida were spared."
